Why: Rio Tinto renewed and upgraded with Perth Wildcats this week, moving into a Principal Partner role through 2029.
Context: Rio Tinto has five active sponsorships across WA, QLD and national assets, covering basketball, rugby league, rugby union and athletics. The partnerships have a strong community focus, combined with the platform of some of Australia’s largest sports teams.
So what: Rio Tinto is making visible, long-term sport commitments in mining heartland markets. Other major miners may look to respond, with many of Australia’s biggest public mining companies currently under-represented in sponsorship - over half of the largest mining companies on the ASX have no involvement in major sport:
